If you or someone you love has suffered from any of the common gallbladder diseases, chances are either traditional gallbladder surgery or laparoscopic gallbladder surgery was ordered as treatment. Even though many surgeries are routine, there is still a risk that something could go wrong and that the doctor or another medical professional is at fault. If you believe that you or a loved one has become the victim of medical malpractice during gallbladder surgery, then you need to take action quickly to find out the truth and to protect your rights. A skilled NY medical malpractice attorney can best advise you on which course of action to take and many times you will be offered a free consultation.

Purpose of the Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located below the liver on the right side of the abdomen. The purpose of the gallbladder is to store bile produced by the liver and release the bile into the small intestine to aid in digestion.

Common Gallbladder Diseases

  • Gallstones – Gallstones are hard deposits of digestive fluid that can form in the gallbladder. These stones can range in size from as smalls as a grain of rice to as large as a golf ball. The gallstones themselves may not cause any pain, but if the stones lead to a blockage of any of the ducts connecting the gallbladder, liver, or pancreas with the intestines, serious complications can occur. Severe gallstone problems may require surgery.
  • Biliary Dyskinesia – Biliary dyskinesia is a gallbladder disease that occurs without the presence of gallstones. This condition is marked by the gallbladder not contracting or emptying properly. This is often a painful ailment. Treatment typically consists of the removal of the gallbladder through laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • Gallbladder Inflammation – Gallbladder inflammation is due to gallstones or a gallbladder infection.
  • Gallbladder Cancer – Gallbladder cancer can be very difficult diagnose. Surgery to remove the gallbladder is a typical treatment as well as the chemotherapy or radiation.

While it is possible for a patient to live a full life without their gallbladder, there are several common errors that happen during gallbladder surgery which can leave a person with serious complications. One of the most common types of mistakes is misjudging the common bile duct for the cystic duct. Cutting the common bile duct is incredibly serious. The common bile duct carries bile from the liver to the small intestine, allowing the body to still distribute bile, even without the presence of the gallbladder.
