Subway Accidents
64New York subways are truly an effective and efficient method of travel. They can have you anywhere in the city quickly and with minimal effort. Unfortunately, convenience is often accompanied by risk. When subway accidents occur, they can often lead to life-altering injuries or even death.
The Federal Railroad Administration reports an average of 3,000 train-related accidents occur yearly, resulting in approximately 1,000 fatalities. Thousands more suffer from serious injuries, and hundreds more fall victim to physical assault. And not only the passenger’s safety is at risk, so is the environment. Subway accidents involving hazardous materials have left severe environmental damage in their wake.
What Could Cause a Subway Accident?
Subways are very different than passenger automobiles. And even though they run on tracks (like a train) accidents can still happen, and they can be just as deadly as car crashes. Subway accidents can happen due to any of the follow reasons:
- Collision with another train, vehicle or person
- Mechanical failure
- Driver negligence
- Operator fatigue
Regardless of what causes a subway accident, the results can be severe, leaving people injured or even dead.
Other Concerns of Modern Subway Passengers
Accidents that involve subways don’t always involve crashes. Passengers are concerned with what can happen inside the car as well. Unsuspecting subway users have unfortunately become a target for vandals and thieves. Rape, robbery, and assault are common types of incidents facing subway travelers.
In addition to potential harm from another individual, substandard walkway, ramp, and curb conditions have increased the chances for slips, trips, and falls.
